Consensus, 1528-1908.

This series contains documents from various agencies and of varying provenance. They are documents connected with the process of establishing a candidate's right to a desired benefice. The documents also can establish that the benefice is in no way encumbered by possession by another, unconfirmed vacancy, or previous agreements concerning control of the benefice and its income. Ps̀ztor indicates that consensus were a kind of certificate of title required of candidates in the process of assuming a benefice or by benefice-holders in the process of resigning, ceding, or exchanging their benefice. The series Consensus consists in part of registers in which the consensus are recorded, and in part, of original documents that are the original acts drawn up to record the consensus. Sometimes they are corroborated by other legal documents that can also be found with them. The series developed in the Camera until the mid-seventeenth century, and then it was maintained by the Datary. Entries include: diocese, type of beneficial business (e.g., translatio, permutatio, pensiones, cessio, resignatio, cassatio, concordia, etc.), persons involved, evidence produced to substantiate the request (often a paraphrase of a notarial act), and often a record of supplication(s) made in an effort to gain the request. Entries are signed and dated, for example, "Missa XIX Aprilis C. Dat." The series needs an index by diocese.

As early as the fourteenth century, the precise date on which the pope granted a particular favor was often a matter of crucial importance. The dating of the supplication, which could be also antedated, signaled the moment from which the grant of the grace had juridical validity. This became important if the same benefice was granted to two persons, because the earliest dated concession generally carried priority. There were other instances where a date might be important, for examp...

The Apostolic Camera, one of the most ancient of the offices of the Roman Curia, was originally responsible for the administration of the temporalities and revenues of the Holy See. Although the term Camera appeared for the first time in Benedict VIII's constitution Quoties illa a Nobis (24 May 1017), some authors state it was the continuation of an office that had existed and been known for a long time as palatium or fiscus under the direction of the archdeacon who remained at the ...
